Rare Old and Vintage Hand Lantern / Candle Lantern – Heavy Model – German Maker Gebr. Bing AG
It has a long handle that folds neatly away into a recess at the back. There are also two handles at the back, but these are fixed in place.
Metal plates can be slid in to black it out on all three sides; at the back there is a small compartment to keep them in, these plates are not at the lamp anymore.
Inside is a clip to hold the candle in place. I expect it originally also held a kerosene reservoir, judging by the space provided for it and the small lever inside.
The chimney can be extended and locked in place.
At the back, at the bottom, a solder joint has come loose — see the photos as well.
Made by Gebr. Bing A.G. of Nuremberg. Most likely from around 1910-1930. Given the blackout function, possibly WWI.
It has a loop both on top and at the back. A very solid and special model. Normally you see this model with the glass sliding into two grooves, but this one has a very unusual half-round faceted glass. The shape of the top cap is also very attractive.
Comes with a candle holder.
Naturally it shows some light signs of age, which gives the lamp character.
Height excluding handle: 22 cm (8.7 in), chimney retracted.
