Vintage Val d'Or Skater's Lantern – French Oil Lamp, 1920s, Good Working Condition
A fantastic skater's lantern, a small oil lamp by the French manufacturer Val d'Or, in good working condition.
A very decorative and atmospheric little oil lamp. You can't see it, but the base is also beautifully worked.
Probably from the 1920s. Val d'Or was the company of Charles Goujon; from 1928 onwards the company no longer produced hurricane lanterns, in order to focus entirely on tools. This lamp therefore most likely dates from before 1928.
A skater's lamp was originally intended for ice skaters, who in the late 19th and early 20th century carried one in the evening to light their way on the ice. A second lamp was sometimes left on the bank to mark where their belongings were. Naturally, it will also have been used for many other purposes, as an orientation light or a night light.
Height (excluding handle): 16 cm
Manufacturer: Val d'Or
Date of manufacture: Probably 1920s
There is a small crack in the brass of the top cap, so when screwing it on, take care not to turn it too far. It still stays firmly in place, so as long as you handle it with care, it makes no difference in use.
