The History Behind the Lamps

Every lamp has a story. Over the years I have researched the manufacturers, patents and trademark records behind rare oil lamps and hurricane lanterns — French, German, British, Belgian, American and Japanese. Read about the companies and the people behind them.

Seller is outstanding! Vast knowledge of lanterns. Specializes in rare and hard to find items. Frequent communications and updates. Valuable suggestions and very fair prices. My go to for European lanterns every time. Thank you!

Both the lamp and the seller are exceptional! First, the seller, who faced a delivery problem that was beyond his control, put all his energy into resolving it successfully, always responded very quickly, and was truly exceptional. Next, the lamp, which is exactly as described, both in terms of its qualities and its flaws. You can therefore have complete confidence in this store's listings! Thank you for everything!

Antique and Vintage Items

These are old lamps, most of them between 50 and 150 years old. They arrive heavily rusted, repainted, leaking or incomplete, and each one is restored by hand. Signs of age and old repairs stay visible, because that is part of what the lamp is. The photos and the description tell you exactly what condition a lamp is in, including its flaws, so please read both before ordering.

Authentic and Original

The aim is always to keep a lamp as original as possible. That is not always achievable — a burner, a glass globe or a wick holder is sometimes missing beyond repair and has to be replaced. Where a part is not original, the product description says so.

Oil lamp Information

Dating is based on markings, patents, catalogues and information shared by other collectors. Where a date is uncertain, it is given as a range rather than a single year. Corrections and additions are always welcome — much of what is known about these manufacturers exists because collectors compare notes.
