Beautiful well-used vintage carbide hand lantern by Orlians & Co from Mechelen, Belgium, dated 1953. A wonderful authentic example with strong industrial character and a richly aged appearance.
The lantern is marked “1953,” and additionally stamped “12 61” on the side, possibly indicating an inspection or service date in 1961.
Functionality and completeness have not been tested. It appears that a small part may be missing beneath the chimney section, and the handle was most likely originally fitted with a wooden grip.
These types of carbide lanterns were widely used as hand lanterns, especially on and around the railways — an area for which Orlians & Co produced many lamps and signaling lanterns.
An excellent decorative industrial piece or a beautiful addition to any railway or antique lantern collection.
