Very unusual vintage lantern / signal lamp in beautifully aged and working condition, featuring a special removable insert system with red and orange glass.

The entire upper section can be removed, allowing the lantern to be used with red glass, orange glass, or without a colored filter. A particularly interesting detail is the glass with its metal holder — an unusual construction that is rarely encountered.

The green finish suggests that this lantern may possibly have seen military use, although this cannot be confirmed, as this color was also widely used during that period due to its availability and low cost.

Compared to earlier railway lanterns, the construction is slightly lighter, most likely dating it to the 1950s–1960s when production focused more on cost efficiency than the heavy-duty build quality of earlier examples.

The lantern creates a wonderful atmosphere when used as an oil lamp. The wick adjustment mechanism works, although it can occasionally be a little stiff.

These types of lanterns were used as hand lanterns and signal lamps, often around railways and during shunting operations or for traffic management. The handle on top allowed them to be easily carried during work.

A great decorative industrial piece or an interesting addition to any railway, military, or lantern collection.
