Special Belgian Carbide Signal Lamp – Orlians & Co, Mechelen, Belgium, 1948. Unusually made of steel; most are brass.
This Belgian carbide signal lamp was made by Orlians & Co of Mechelen in 1948.
On the front is a small plate, on which the place where the lamp was used was often stamped; that is not the case with this one. What makes it special is that it is almost entirely made of steel; only the fitting around the two handles is brass. Signal lamps of this kind are usually made entirely of brass/bronze. This probably has to do with the year of production: shortly after WW2 there was a great shortage of materials such as brass and bronze.
This type of lamp was used as a signal lamp, among other things when shunting trains; hence the coloured glasses.
The front has clear glass, the sides have white glasses, and there are two additional front glasses in red and green. These coloured glasses are new, with an old look.
The lamp has not been tested, but the reservoir drips steadily and the carbide burner tip appears [...]
