Fantastic Carbide Signal Lamp / Shunting Lamp – Heavy, Solid Model – French Maker Dehail & Grenier Paris – An Eyecatcher
Fantastic Carbide Signal Lamp / Shunting Lamp – Heavy, Solid Model – French Maker Dehail & Grenier Paris – An Eyecatcher. The maker's name is visible above the clear glass at the front.
You can slide the clear glass pane upward to light the carbide lamp; the red glass panes can also be slid in front of the sides, or pushed up out of the way when not in use.
On the side is a brass plate reading Cambrai 2365 Gelain Georges. So it was used in this town, and Georges Gelain was most likely the person who operated this lamp. I also found a Georges Henri Gelain from Cambrai on Geneanet, who lived from 1914 to 1974, which fits well with the period this lamp was used.
This type of lamp was used on and around the railway as a signal lamp, including during shunting.
This signal lamp is very heavy and solid, also with a sturdy bracket at the back. The height is 37 cm (14.6 in), weighing almost 2.5 kg (5.5 lb).
Operation unknown, not tested.
