Vintage Welch Patent Railway Lamp BR E – Lamp Manufacturing & Railway Supplies Ltd London – Brass and Copper Details, 23 cm
Welch Patent railway lamp by Lamp Manufacturing & Railway Supplies Ltd, London, presumably from the 1930s. Lamps of the Welch Patent type were used by the British railways for signal lighting.
The plate on the front reads: LAMP MANUFACTURING & RAILWAY SUPPLIES LTD LONDON, SOLE OWNERS & MANUFACTURERS, WELCH PATENT. The top is embossed WELCH PATENT and Rd No 711206, a British registered design number dating from 1925. The lamp is also marked BR E, for British Railways East, and the fount carries an M, possibly for Midland.
The lamp measures 23 cm in height and 15 cm in width. It has a chimney partly made of copper, a cap on a chain, and attractive brass and copper details. The glass carries two lines showing the height at which the flame was to be set. The slide that keeps the door closed is meant to slot into a holder; the holder is missing, but the door stays firmly shut. The lamp works very well.
A railway lamp that still works, with the lines on the glass indicating the correct flame height.
