Old candle lantern, known as a Fourgon Lantern, with a side-mounted candle holder. Reportedly Swiss, used by the Swiss Army. The "glass" is Cellon, an early form of plastic, and appears to be original.
Fourgon is French for wagon or cart; this type of lantern was often hung from the shaft of a vehicle. (Source: Zirkel-im-licht.de)

A regular candle is currently fitted, but originally it should hold a 25 mm candle. Because of that, it sits a bit loosely, though it's kept in place by a small aluminium candle holder.
