Vintage Royalux Hurricane Lantern – French Oil Lantern – Fully Working
Beautiful vintage Royalux hurricane lantern, also known as a French oil lantern, in very nice condition. This original Royalux lantern is complete and fully working.
What makes this hurricane lantern especially unique is the glass lift mechanism. By lowering the side lever, the glass smoothly moves upward, a refined and uncommon feature that adds to its charm. Another rare detail is the protective wire cage, a design element that is not often seen on lanterns of this type.
The top of the lantern is clearly marked with “Royalux – Bté S.G.D.G. – Made in France,” confirming its authentic French origin. Royalux was a brand of the well-known French manufacturer SIF, La Société Industrielle de Ferblanterie. This particular model is believed to have been produced between approximately 1955 and 1970, making it a fine example of mid‑20th‑century French industrial design.
Naturally, the lantern shows light signs of age, which only enhance its character and vintage appeal. It is a wonderful addition to any collection of antique or vintage lanterns, but it is also perfectly suitable for practical use. This hurricane lantern can be used as atmospheric lighting indoors, in the garden, or during camping and holidays.
The lantern is fitted with a new wick and has only been used with pure kerosene/paraffin. It stands approximately 27 cm tall and features the original glass, which is intact and free of chips or cracks. The metal has been lightly treated to slow down rust formation; for long-term outdoor use, additional protection against the elements is recommended.
