Vintage Red Rear Marker Lamp / Tail Signal Lamp (1950s/60s)
Beautiful old rear marker lamp (tail signal), painted red and in vintage condition, reportedly from municipal public works, complete with red filter lenses.
These types of lamps were commonly used on vehicles as rear markers or tail lights, to mark the front or back of a wagon or other equipment. This explains the heavy mounting bracket on the back. According to the previous owner, GW stands for Gemeente Werken (Municipal Works), though this is not certain.
Inside the lamp, coloured glass filters can be slid in front of the lenses, and the side panels contain red glass.
Naturally, the lamp shows light signs of age, which only adds to its character. A wonderful addition to a collection, but also perfectly usable as atmospheric lighting in the home, garden, or while travelling.
The lamp is fitted with a new wick and has only been used with pure kerosene. Originally, the oil reservoir had a small rod attached to make it easier to remove, but this piece is no longer present.
Height including handle: 48 cm
Production date: Estimated 1950s/1960s
