Very Special Hurricane Lantern, Probably by Nier, circa 1913–1918, with Winged Ship Plate, in Working Condition
A very special hurricane lantern, probably made by Nier and probably dating from around 1913–1918, with a plate showing a winged ship.
The chimney tube is marked with the numbers DRGM 544938 and 563933. The model, with its distinctive glass lift and the clamps for the air tubes, has features that link this hurricane lantern to Nier.
But the most remarkable thing about this lamp is the plate. It is no longer very easy to read, but this is what can be made out.
Text on the plate:

It is a mystery what this lamp was intended for; perhaps as lighting on board a flying boat, or as a tribute to one, as the timing does coincide. In 1913, Sopwith Aviation designed a flying boat that was exhibited at the International Aero Show at Olympia, London; it was the first successful flying boat in the United Kingdom.
Naturally it shows signs of the passage of time, but that also gives the lantern its character. The air tubes are not completely firm on the fount and wobble slightly.
There are still traces of old paint on it, which I deliberately left in place.
A fine addition to a collection, but also still excellent for use as lighting.
Height excluding handle: 34 cm.
Fitted with a new wick, only used with pure paraffin.
