Special Belgian Carbide Signal Lamp – TR 56 Mechelen – Likely 1930s-1950s
This carbide signal lamp comes from Belgium and most likely dates from the 1930s to the 1950s. The maker is unknown.
The front is marked TR 56 Mechelen. This suggests the lamp was likely used at the railway station in Mechelen.
This type of lamp was used as a signal lamp, among other things during shunting; hence the coloured glass panels.
The front has clear glass, the sides have small white glass panels, and there are two attachable glass panels in red and green. These coloured glass panels are new, though styled to look old.
The lamp is made of copper and brass.
Condition is well-worn. The parts of the handle have come apart from each other and would once have been fixed together. Whether the lamp still works has not been tested.
Measurements:
Height: 23 cm (9.1 in), excluding handle
Width: 11 cm (4.3 in)
Weight: 2.4 kg (5.3 lb)
A heavy, characterful piece of signal-lamp history, with clear signs of use on the railway.
