Fantastic XXL Prisco No. 2 hurricane lantern by Pritchard Strong Co. from Rochester, USA, fitted with exceptionally rare amethyst-colored glass. This impressive lantern is in excellent and fully working condition.

The lantern is considerably larger than most examples normally encountered, making it a true eye-catcher and an outstanding display piece. Produced around 1910 by Pritchard Strong Co., it features a beautifully simple yet effective globe lift mechanism and a striking combination of brass and steel construction.

The real highlight of this lantern is, of course, the beautiful clear amethyst-colored globe.

Amethyst-colored glass is often the result of manganese being added to glass between approximately 1890 and 1915 to make it appear clearer. Over time, exposure to ultraviolet light causes the glass to develop a light purple or amethyst tint. This type of glass was commonly used for bottles, jars, and lantern globes during that period.

With hurricane lanterns, naturally tinted amethyst glass is mostly found on older, simpler, or replacement globes. A subtle purple hue is generally considered a natural effect caused by decades of sunlight exposure.

Considering its age, the lantern remains in excellent working condition, while still showing authentic signs of age and use that add to its historical charm and character.

A fantastic addition to any antique lantern or Americana collection, while also remaining perfectly suitable as atmospheric lighting for the home, garden, camping, or holiday use.
