Rare Railway Hand Lamp / Signal Lantern – G. Knodt Frankfurt for K.E.D. Saarbrücken (c. 1900–1918)
A rare and fascinating railway hand lamp / signal lantern manufactured by G. Knodt Frankfurt A/M for K.E.D. Saarbrücken, part of the German Royal Railways around 1900–1918.
This is an exceptional oil‑burning signal lamp with a beautiful combination of materials: a brass top, wooden handle, black painted body, and copper rivets. It appears to be completely original and intact.
A special feature is the red signal lens, which can be stored in a holder at the back and positioned in front of the main glass when needed. This means the lamp was used both as a hand lantern and as a railway signal light.
The rear brass plaques make this piece even more remarkable:
- The lower plaque is stamped “G. Knodt Frankfurt A/M”, confirming the maker.
- Above it, a crown with the inscription “K.E.D. Saarbrücken” (Königliche Eisenbahndirektion).
Based on these marks, the lamp can be dated between 1895 and 1918, most likely around 1910–1918.
It is complete, fully functional, and still fitted with its original burner.
For its age, the lamp is in wonderful, authentic condition, showing only the expected signs of time, which contribute to its character and historic appeal. It has been fitted with a new wick.
A highly decorative and atmospheric oil lamp — perfect for collectors, railway enthusiasts, industrial‑style interiors, or anyone looking for a unique vintage accent piece.
A true eye‑catcher in any setting.
