Rare Antique Train Lantern – Rencker & Zonen Utrecht (c. 1890)
Own a remarkable piece of railway history: an authentic hand lantern oil lamp from around 1890, manufactured by Rencker & Zonen, Utrecht. This is a beautiful and very old example, showcasing exceptional craftsmanship from a renowned Dutch metal foundry.
The original plate reads:
“Rencker & Zonen Fabrikanten Utrecht”, accompanied by an emblem featuring two lions and a crown. Rencker & Zonen operated from 1844 to circa 1932, producing copper and metal goods, including railway equipment.
Historical Significance:
These lanterns were widely used as hand lamps on and around the railways, often for signaling and shunting. This model features two handles—one on top and one at the back—for versatile use.
Condition Notes:
- Original wick holder marked “Cöln”, indicating pre-1901 manufacture (now replaced with a non-original holder that fits but is not very secure).
- Missing one glass bracket on the right side.
- Door latch is a later replacement.
- Shows authentic signs of age and use, adding character (see photos).
Despite its age, this lantern can still serve as atmospheric lighting and is a unique collector’s item.
