A fantastic and rare mining lamp by A. Dufrane‑Castiau, the Belgian manufacturer active between 1875 and 1920.
This model is known as the “Lampe de Reconnaissance”, an improved type of safety lamp specifically designed for mine overseers and engineers. It features an elongated viewing opening that allows you to see the flame and the wire gauze more clearly—making it easier to detect the presence of firedamp (mine gas).
This example is in beautiful, working condition, equipped with a wick and fitted with Jenaer Glas.
A brass plaque on the body reads:
“Offert par les charbonnages
De Monceau – Fontaine
A Monceau S/Sambre.”
The ring above the glass is also marked Monceau. This strongly suggests that the lamp was manufactured for the Charbonnage de Monceau‑Fontaine, and likely presented as a gift on a special occasion. The plaque itself may have been added later.
For a lamp of this age and purpose, it is in remarkably original and well‑preserved condition. Wonderfully atmospheric as an oil lamp, highly decorative even unlit, and an exceptional piece for any mining or industrial heritage collection.
