Fantastic Small Trench Art Oil Lamp Made from an Ammunition Shell Casing – La Madelon – Beautifully Decorated, with Matching Glass
A small trench art oil lamp, made from an ammunition shell casing, beautifully decorated and fitted with a well-matched glass.
Trench art is the working of ammunition shell casings and originated in WW1, as a pastime during the long waits in the trenches. It also continued to be made a great deal after WW1.
As it is marked Depose, this one will be of later manufacture.
Originally there was no glass on it; this one seemed the most fitting to me, because it resembles a flame.
The casing is beautifully worked, and it also bears the text La Madelon, which comes from a famous French soldiers' song from 1914, Quand Madelon.
The wick holder is unmarked and still works very well. It has a screw thread, but of a different size from the casing; it does sit very firmly and securely, and it is perfectly usable as it is.
Height including glass: 25.5 cm (10.0 in)
Height excluding glass: 18 cm (7.1 in)
Production date: Most likely 1920s/30s
There is always room for a little lamp like this.
