Rare Improved Hitchcock Lamp, an unusual oil lamp manufactured in the United States between 1895 and 1905. It has a built-in mechanical fan designed to create a stable flame without a chimney glass, useful in remote locations where replacement glass was hard to obtain.

The burner is marked:
"The Improved Hitchcock Lamp
Made in United States of America
New York
Patented Nov. 30 1880 – July 20 1888 – Dec. 17 1895"

Hitchcock originally made clocks. Their first lamp design used a rotating mechanism beneath the oil reservoir; this improved version uses a winding key on the front instead.

The fan's clockwork mechanism was previously non-functional but has been restored by a clockmaker and now works well. Note: do not overwind the mechanism.

A longer demonstration video is available on YouTube, showing the fan in motion and the lamp operating without a chimney glass.

Rarely offered for sale in this complete, working condition.
