Extremely rare French hurricane lantern, model SIF 501, in beautiful and fully usable condition, featuring a brass base and brass upper tank rim.

While the SIF 500 is commonly encountered, the SIF 501 appears only very rarely. This special version was equipped with:

  • a brass bottom plate,
  • a brass rim around the upper section of the tank,
  • and a brass filler cap.

This version was sometimes marketed as the “maritime” model, as the brass base is far less likely to rust through and the brass filler cap is less prone to seizing over time.

SIF stands for Société Industrielle de Ferblanterie, a French manufacturer well known for producing hurricane lanterns. This example is believed to date from approximately 1950–1970.

The lantern remains in beautiful working condition. The air tubes have a few small holes and a minor dent, and the protective cage around the glass also has a small dent.

Fitted with a new wick and only used with clean kerosene.

A highly unusual and desirable addition to any collection, while also still perfectly suitable for atmospheric lighting in the home, garden, camping, or on holiday.
