A British Chalwyn Tropic hurricane lantern, used by the army, with its original paint.

Chalwyn Ltd. was founded in 1943 by Wyndham Hewitt and had its factory in Poole, England. The company made hurricane lanterns there between 1946 and 1970; Tropic was one of its earliest model names.

The Chalwyn Tropic is a hurricane lantern you come across fairly often, but not so often with the additional text on the chimney cap, which reads MK2 and JA.12159.
MK2 stands for Mark 2, and JA.12159 is probably an identification number for hurricane lanterns, as the same text can also be found on certain Gremlin models.

Naturally it shows very light signs of the passage of time, but that also gives the lantern its character. The paint is damaged in a few places.
A fine addition to a collection, but also still excellent for use as lighting in the home, in the garden or on holiday.
