Beautiful, Almost Unused Miner’s Lamp by Hubert Joris (ca. 1900) with Val St. Lambert Glass
This exceptionally well‑preserved miner’s lamp, dating from around 1900, was made by Hubert Joris of Belgium. It is in fantastic condition and fitted with original Val St. Lambert D.S.4 glass.
The lamp is in full working order—the wick holder moves up and down smoothly. In my opinion, this piece is very close to New Old Stock: it shows no signs of heavy use. It has two small holes in the top where a plate would have been mounted. It was lit at some point, but likely never used underground.
According to various sources, this is a Master Hewer’s Lamp (Meesterhouwerslamp) produced by Hubert Joris, also known as Joris Lampe. These lamps are known to be very similar in style and construction to Wolf miner’s lamps.
It makes a wonderfully atmospheric oil lamp, but even unlit it stands out as a striking decorative piece suitable for any interior. Alternatively, keep it unused as a rare and special addition to a serious collection.
There are no maker’s marks on the lamp; the glass is clearly stamped Val St. Lambert D.S.4.
