Antique Ship’s Lantern / Cabin Lamp – Beautiful Early Example, c. 1875
A fantastic antique ship’s lantern / candle lamp, likely dating from around 1875 and possibly as early as 1850–1875. This is a very old and atmospheric piece, probably used on board a ship as a cabin lamp to provide interior lighting.
Its age is evident in the construction: the design strongly suggests maritime use, and unlike later ship lamps (which typically used round glass and oil reservoirs), this example still features its early-style glass panels.
The combination of steel with brass details gives it a beautiful, authentic presence.
The small decorative knob on top of the chimney is a later addition. Originally, there was an opening at the top — likely because someone mounted a small electric bulb at some point — and the current brass button was added to cover this hole. It fits surprisingly well and preserves the lamp’s overall appearance.
As expected for an antique piece, it shows signs of age, which only enhance its character.
The glass panels have some scratches and a few small losses at the bottom — please refer to the photos.
This lantern would make a stunning decorative piece in any interior, or a wonderful addition to a maritime collection or historical candleholder display.
