Antique Claridge Carbide Bicycle Lamp – Nickel, Red & Green Side Prisms, on Custom Stand
This carbide bicycle lamp is marked Claridge. The brand is unknown to me; I expect it is English and probably dates from around 1900–1920.
The lamp sits on a special stand that I had made for it, so it can be displayed nicely.
Carbide bicycle lamps were used as bicycle lighting from 1896 into the 1940s, not so much to light the road as mainly to be seen. On the sides are a small red and a small green prism lens, so the rider was also visible from the side. The sprung bracket fitted onto a holder on the bicycle.
The lamp is made of nickel and has a convex lens, which is undamaged. The condition is good.
The lamp is complete, but has not been tested.
