This candle lantern carries no maker's name or marks at all, so who built it, and where, cannot be established. It most likely dates from between 1900 and 1930.

Two details give it character. There is a small slide that lets you shut the lantern "off". The upper part of the handle also swivels; what that was meant for I do not fully understand, as it turns the light to the side or to the rear without you having to turn your hand. Whether the small lever is original I cannot say — it does stay up as it should.

The window glass was missing and has been replaced. Beyond that the lantern is well worn but perfectly usable, and it burns an ordinary candle.

A lantern that does not need to sit in a cabinet: put a candle in, slide it open, and it does what it was built to do.
