Hurricane Lanterns & Road Danger Lamps by Chalwyn

Below is an overview of the oil lamps and hurricane lanterns produced by Chalwyn. Unfortunately, no official catalogues or factory documentation is in my collection, which makes precise dating impossible. What is known is that the company operated from 1943 to 2000, which provides a broad timeframe for these products.

Chalwyn New Lynx

This rare Chalwyn New Lynx storm lantern is probably produced in the 1970s, it features its original branded glass, which remains in very good condition and carries the Chalwyn logo. The New Lynx succeeded the earlier Chalwyn Lynx and is encountered far less often, making it an interesting model within the brand’s history.

The lantern is marked “New Lynx” on the top, with “Chalwyn” stamped on the side of the frame. It stands 32 cm tall without the handle, and the tank is inscribed “Made in England – Chalwyn New Lynx.” Both the metal body and the glass confirm its British manufacture.

Chalwyn Lynx

This restored Chalwyn Lynx storm lantern is a fine example of mid‑20th‑century British lighting. The lamp is in very good condition, and the original glass—marked with the Chalwyn logo—has also been well preserved. A notable feature is the glass lifter, which is uncommon on a hot‑blast lantern and adds to its technical interest.

The lantern stands 34.5 cm tall without the handle. The tank is stamped Made in England – Chalwyn “Lynx”. Production is probably dated to the 1950s to 1970s, and the glass is likewise marked Made in England.

Chawlyn Tempest

This New Old Stock Chalwyn Tempest storm lantern is a well‑preserved example of late 20th‑century British lighting. It retains its original branded glass, which is in excellent condition and still includes the original protective plastic sleeve. The lantern is finished in a blue hammer‑tone colour, giving it a distinctive appearance. Its size makes it one of the more imposing models in the Chalwyn range. The plastic fuel cap is characteristic of later production and prevents the risk of corrosion.

The lantern stands 33 cm tall without the lifting ring or handle. The tank is marked Tempest Chalwyn, confirming its model and manufacturer.
My assumption is that this lantern was manufactured in China.

Chalwyn Far East

This restored Chalwyn storm lantern is a fine example of mid‑20th‑century British lighting. The lamp is fully functional, and the original glass—marked with the Chalwyn logo—has a deep ruby colour that adds to its distinctive appearance.

Chalwyn Tropic

The Chalwyn Tropic stands 25 cm tall without the lifting ring or handle. The tank is stamped Made in England – Chalwyn Tropic, confirming both model and origin. Production is generally dated to the 1960s or 1970s.
