It is an imposing and heavily built hurricane lantern, made especially striking by its large yellow glass and the sophisticated glass lift system. The yellow glass is highly distinctive, and at the rear there is a viewing window that allows the flame to be checked while the lantern is in use. On the bottom, the lantern is marked with a Swiss cross, confirming its Swiss origin.

What makes this hurricane lantern even more special is the original sticker on the front. Although not all of the text is still legible, the company name “Elga” can clearly be read. Above this, part of the word “signalisa…” is visible, suggesting that the lantern was likely used by a company involved in signalling or marking systems. In addition, the initials of the original owner are still present on the lantern, adding a unique and personal historical layer.

The condition of this lantern is truly exceptional. There is some surface dirt, which has been deliberately left untouched, as cleaning it would risk damaging or removing the original stickers and the owner’s initials. This untouched state greatly adds to the authenticity and collectible value of the piece.

This Helvetia hurricane lantern is a wonderful addition to any serious collection, but it can also still be used as atmospheric lighting indoors, in the garden, or while travelling or camping.

The lantern has a height of approximately 41 cm excluding the handle. It was manufactured by Egloff & Cie and is believed to date from around 1920. It has not been treated against rust formation. The lantern is fitted with a new wick and, as shown, is in working condition.

https://rareoillamps.com/products/rare-swiss-helvetia-hurricane-lantern-by-egloff-cie-yellow-glass-c-1920
